Living the Future in the Present

“If you are worrying about the future, fear and worry no more.”

I wanted to share a bit of advice to two of our bandmates in YFL Biliran Music Ministry during our household this morning but the time forbade me to do so; hence, I planned to write it with elaboration and post it on the web so that I can share it also to other people especially those who need it most.

Basically, there are three phases in life – the past, the present and the future. Among these, the future makes our lives exciting despite uncertainties. Aside from dreaming of what we would be in the future, many of us also think about other things that will happen in our lives in the future.

There is nothing wrong in giving ourselves time to think about the future. The dilemma only happens when we think of it, negatively. Do we still have food to eat? Will we already be sleeping on the streets next week? Is the world gonna end in 2012? This problem is very common among us and has greatly affected millions of lives. We worry too much about the future that we forget that we still have the present to live. Because of this, we tend to live our lives badly.

Thinking negatively about the future makes us lose the focus. It is like driving a vehicle on a very dark road. We might think of ghosts, monsters or robbers who might come in our way and if we allow these matters scramble in our mind, we would surely lose our focus and it might lead us into an accident.

For example, a person was thinking that he might be dead on the next day and was worrying that he would miss life so much. So he used up all his wealth, brought the things he wanted, gambled in the casino, made himself drunk, and played with girls. He thought he enjoyed life as if it was his last day on earth. On the next day, he found himself alive on the street holding a bottle of alcoholic drink but he was already broke that not even a single peso was left in his pocket.

Thinking negatively about the future also makes us vain. Suppose that a female Biology graduate dreams to be a doctor in the near future but she thinks that she does not have enough intelligence to achieve it. She also imagines herself reading many volumes of medical book but thinks she cannot do it. Without even trying, she eventually gives up her dream; instead, she thinks of a very profitable job that requires less hardwork.

We think negatively of the future because we worry of the things that would come in our way that we consider as bad just like problems. We worry because we prejudge ourselves that we cannot handle these matters and we do not want to fail. Because we do not want to fail, we do not try because we avoid trouble but later on, we regret, consider ourselves failure and eventually, we would feel depressed and hopeless. Instead of achieving the thing(s) we want in the future, we would just end up achieving nothing and sometimes, our lives would even be destroyed.

To avoid this dilemma, we need to think positively of the future and to do that, we need to live the future in the present itself. Another ‘present’ word means a gift and if we allow ourselves to think out of the box, we may consider the present (time) as a gift from GOD that we can enjoy and must spend wisely for genuine and eternal happiness. It is a gift since it is a chance for us to prepare for the future. In our childhood days, our parents taught us the things we need – walking, eating, reading, etc. – in preparation for our life in the future. At school, we prepare for our future examinations by reviewing our lessons. We also involve ourselves in societal activities while studying as we prepare ourselves for the real society that we will be entering after exiting the portals of our colleges. From these, we can see that everything in the future needs preparation and the best time to prepare is the present.

Do not worry living the present because of problems that we will be encountering. Problems are natural and inevitable; so far, no one has been recorded to have lived his/her life without problems. We may be losing our strength as we face these problems or we are just weak at all but remember that there is one constant strength that exists – GOD’s Strength – and all we need to do is to rely on it.

Most of allwe need to have Faith in our Creator Who really holds the blueprint of our lives. Although someone would rob that blueprint, fear not because our Creator is Strong enough to retrive it. If we fall in the wrong path, it would be difficult for us to go back to the right one because, alone, each of us is weak. Nevertheless, believe that with GOD’s Ultimate Strength, we will be brought back to the right path towards the Home that GOD has prepared for us just as he promised and assured us:

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. (John 14:2-3)

Despite all uncertainties in the future, this ‘Home’ is certain. Now, in the present, we all just need to prepare for It by living life in righteousness and in accordance to His Teachings and Commandments:loving GOD and loving one another.

So, try living the future in the present with utmost trust in GOD and His Will for us and we shall not live a life full of anxieties and fear but we shall live a life full of peace and happiness that are everlasting.
